Comment from the Law-and-Arbitration Blog: Public Purpose is one of the most important topics in investment law that is highly debated in treaty negotiations and, mainly, in international investment arbitration cases. The issue is presented as a defense against investors' claims of expropriation. The symposium discusses the current debate on this subject and, particularly, the lack of an uniform concept of public purpose in international investment law. The book "Public Purpose in International Law - Rethinking Regulatory Sovereignty in the Global Era" inspired the event and one of the speakers was one of the authors of this book, Mr. Ryan Reetz.
