Scotland will showcase its expertise in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods at an international conference hosted by the Scottish Arbitration Centre in Edinburgh today, the first part of a three-day event involving dispute resolution experts from around the world.
The International ADR Conference of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), the global professional body for promoting the settlement of disputes by arbitration, mediation and other ADR methods, will be followed tomorrow and Saturday byCIArb's world congress.
Today's meeting in Edinburgh will highlight much of the work that has been carried out since the introduction of the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010.
The Act, reflecting the best of arbitration practice around the world, has already been commended for its good draftsmanship. It brings in a scheme which it is hoped will attract not only local but also international business.
The conference, "ADR - the International Dimension", brings together a wide range of topics presented by leading ADR practitioners from across the world. Speakers include Brandon Malone, chairman of the Scottish Arbitration Centre; Len Bunton and Janey Milligan, directors of the Centre; and Hew Dundas, its honorary vice president. Court of Session judge Lord Glennie will make the keynote speech, and Jeffrey Elkinson, the president of CIArb, will discuss the relevance of CIArb in the arbitration world when he addresses the 120 delegates from across the globe.
Held every two years, the purpose of the congress is to discuss significant issues arising in the field of private dispute resolution; ascertain the views of the branch representatives on these and in respect of the policies, structure and management of the Institute; and make recommendations to the Institute's board of management. It also elects the Institute's office bearers.
Andrew Mackenzie, chief executive of the Scottish Arbitration Centre, said he was delighted that the Centre could welcome the CIArb world congress to Scotland and be involved in the international conference and dinner.
"CIArb's decision to hold its congress in Edinburgh illustrates the interest from the international arbitration community in the recent modernisation of Scottish arbitration", he commented.
"The conference and dinner will provide the Centre with a valuable opportunity to promote the new Act."
